Harry and Charlotte expand their leadership horizons
The Red Angus Society of Australia are please to announce the attendance of Harry Turnham and Charlotte Nugent in the third edition of the ARCBA Young Breed Leaders Workshop. This workshop aims to guide and inspire young beef industry enthusiasts to take on and be prepared for management opportunities within the beef breeding industry.
This amazing opportunity is hosted by the Australian Registered Cattle Breeders Association (ARCBA) over two days on the 24th and 25th of October in Brisbane, Queensland. Harry and Charlotte will be participating in the workshop alongside other Australian breed representatives who will all be creating strong relationships while gaining life-long experiences and knowledge to prepare them for management roles within the beef industry.
Meet the Delegates
Harry Turnham
Harry has spent the past 2 years upholding a management role on a large scale dairy operation. After completing his Certificate IV in Agriculture, it has only encouraged him to complete and obtain his Diploma in Agriculture. Harry has a particular interest in stud stock genetics and genetic traits.
Based at Warrnambool in South Western Victoria, Harry spends his spare time supporting his father with the family enterprise, Barregowa Cattle Company where he is heavily involved with the genetic selection and breeding of the cattle. Harry’s experiences and knowledge brings a sustainable for focused insight to the operation. “I aspire to expand our current Red Angus seed stock operation by adding a large commercial operation.” says Harry.
In 2022, Harry has also had the opportunity to judge multiple breeds at the Melbourne Royal Show. ‘It was a great honour’ said Harry.
Youth Committee Vice-President Harry is known as the man who works behind the scenes. With Harry’s forward thinking approach to the beef breeding industry, he believes that there should be more emphasis on genetics, not only within the Red Angus Society, however in beef breeding as a whole. Harry would like to bring more knowledge and understanding regarding genetic testing, genomics, and EBV’s to the industry. He believes this will flow on to encourage more data entered to create better established, consistent data and more accuracy within data. Harry can see the long-term benefits and how this initiative will help support young breed leaders strive within the industry.
Charlotte Nugent
Charlotte is based in Wagga Wagga, New South Wales where she is currently finalizing her final year of studies completing a Bachelor of Agriculture Business Management through Charles Sturt University. With her siblings, Charlotte manages a small herd of Red Angus. “I have been lucky enough to have been involved in the industry from a young age with my parents having a Red Angus herd in my early life, my nan and pop also owning a shorthorn stud and commercial breeders for much of my life.” said Charlotte. While in high-school Charlotte worked closely with Goondoola Livestock owned by the Powe family, she gained valuable industry knowledge and skills which has supported her to her achievements today.
Charlotte never hesitates to step out of her comfort zone and chase new learning opportunities. Charlotte has been presented with the Agri-Futures Horizon Scholarship for 2023 and 2022, the 2023 Summer Intern Opportunity within the American Hereford Association and in 2021 she was nominated to attend the 2021 CSU Angus Australia Intern Initiative. Charlotte aspires for a future career in marketing and communications within Australian agriculture.
Charlotte also strives to push the youth involvement within agriculture, especially the Red Angus Society. As Charlotte has taking on the role of President of the Red Angus Youth Committee, she strives to nurture the pathway for fellow youth in the agricultural industry. “I want to promote youth involvement in the industry and work professionally to enable a better industry for generations tomorrow than we have today.” said Charlotte.
